A community development professional for over 15 years, Brad has chosen to live and work in Detroit since 2005 (including a 'comeback' in 2011 after grad school). Facing Stage IV Renal Cell Carcinoma - Kidney cancer - at the age of 35, he's devoted to living courageously and wholeheartedly throughout the process with his wife, family and extensive network of friends and supporters. A two time cancer survivor herself, Dana knows what it's like to live with courage. Now in the caretaker role, Dana has mastered the art of green juicing, kitchen dancing, and the beauty of living in the present. Still capturing the moments, Dana's life is filled with courage and bold expression through her styling business, documenting her own journey to warriorhood, and finding the joy in life's moments.

A lawyer, scholar, parent, devoted husband and daydreamer about the world, Jeremy embraces the love of being human by his mantra to 'Answer Well.' Jeremy moved to Detroit with his wife and daughter in 2016 for a great job opportunity, and in between legal battles, cups of Joe, and riverwalk runs, he still insists on life's big breaks.

Our Story
The podcast is produced by three friends who met in college at Mary Washington in Virginia from 2001-2005.
Brad and Jeremy have been best friends since spending the bulk of their collegiate time daydreaming about changing the world, and ever since supporting each other's big breaks, big decisions and bigger mutual love for being human.
Brad and Dana met senior year, and over the next two years, an epic love story took hold. After his first year out of college on a community development fellowship that brought Brad to live and work in Detroit, one night in August 2006, he called Dana to profess his love for her. A week later, Dana had quit her job, broke her lease and moved to Detroit.
In 2008, Jeremy married Brad and Dana on their rooftop ceremony on the first day of fall. Their vows were to choose love, and Jeremy's tribute celebrated their love and devotion, for Dana through imagery, and for Brad through prose.
Incredibly, the three found themselves living together again, along with Jeremy's wife Meredith and daughter Tessa in the summer of 2016 after Jeremy landed a great opportunity to advance his legal career in Detroit. This summer, they started the 'Defending Your Life' podcast (ironically, to say the least, by that very name) as a homage to the early 90s film about living courageously, which would be a weekly exchange to discuss life, current events and how we're all trying to live out their values in a complex world.
Then, with very little warning whatsoever, Brad was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in October, 2016.
Ever since, Brad, Dana and Jeremy have been podcasting about this enormous challenge, but with the same core purpose in place: how do we navigate through this crisis wholeheartedly? How, in the face of extraordinary odds, do we live rich with love, connection and honesty.
Welcome to Defending Your Life. Thanks for listening.
